German-American Club Plans Aug. 9-12 Bus Trip To New Ulm, MN
An August 9-12, 2010 bus trip to New Ulm, Minn., has been planned by
the German-American Club in Hermann. Though the trip is limited to the
first 40 people who register, club president Mary Kunstmann said she
has already heard of some interest.
“A handful of folks have expressed interest so far. We'll probably
fill up our bus,” said Kunstmann. “I think it'll be an exciting trip.”
Participants in the trip will have the opportunity to experience
Germany in Minnesota through two days of planned activities in New
Ulm.
Following a welcome reception at the city's visitor center on the
first day, the group will have a guided tour of New Ulm, including the
German-Bohemian monument, the Cathedral and Dakota Conflict sites. A
tour of the Brown County Museum, German-Bohemian Heritage Society's
Library and performance by the Glockenspiel are also scheduled during
the morning of the first day.
After lunch at the Kaiserhoff Restaurant, participants well be
welcomed at the Hermann monument by New Ulm mayor Joel Albrecht before
the group climbs the monument and takes in the views in a 15 mile
radius. The group will then gather at the historic Turner Hall for a
meal and an evening of “gemutlichkeit” with the members of the Hermann
Monument Society [of New Ulm]. Several members from the Hermann
Monument Society were in Hermann, Mo., last September for the
dedication of the Arminium/Hermann statue.
The second day starts off with participants having the opportunity to
take a walking tour, shop and have lunch on their own before touring
the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame in the afternoon. Additionally, the
group will be touring the Wanda Gag House and August Schell Brewery,
including a beer tasting and visit to the gift shop and gardens, in
the afternoon.
A concert by the Concord Singers, accompanied by The Narren, will
highlight the evening of the second day during a buffet dinner.
Hotel rooms have been reserved at the Holiday Inn in New Ulm. Cost for
the trip is $325 per person, double occupancy and $450 per person,
single occupancy. The cost includes transportation, three night at the
Holiday Inn, one lunch, two dinner meals and admission to the sites
scheduled to be visited.
