Hermann Father And Son In Tractor/Bus Accident
A 1998 Prevost Tour Bus collided with a farm tractor yesterday at approximately 9 p.m., resulting in the hospitalization of Jeffrey Eldringhoff, 37, and his son Evan, 12.
The bus, driven by Washington, MO resident Jimmie Cotner, was 1.5 miles west of the intersection of Hwy. 94 and Route P at the time. Cotner was unable to see the 1965 International 560 tractor, as it had no safety lights. It was speculated that, as that model has only a single white light on the rear, the bus driver assumed it was a motorcycle until making a last-minute swerve.
The collision drove both vehicles sharply in opposite directions on Hwy. 94, with the bus swerving off the north side of the highway and the tractor rolled south. A rear wheel of the tractor was broken off and rolled onto 94, making the bus's path even more cluttered.
The elder Eldringhoff was transported by helicopter to University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia, MO after being found unconscious at the scene. 12-year-old Evan was thrown clear of the tractor and taken by ambulance to Hermann Area District Hospital. Both were without safety devices, as none are provided on the International 560 model. Cotner is listed as uninjured, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
