Employers Sought to Benefit From Missouri Summer Jobs Program

By Glen Blesi

A federal grant is enabling the state of Missouri to provide paid internships and work experiences for young people between the ages of 14 and 24. The state is now seeking employers to sign up for the initiative, which is known as the Missouri Summer Jobs Program. The state will pay wages and workers’ compensation.

More than 320 professional career counselors and business liaisons will be on hand to provide personal support to the workers.

Last year employers helped more than 7,000 Missouri youth gain career skills. With employment opportunities still at low levels, the program enables businesses to help the situation. In addition, businesses can benefit by receiving extra help at a time when new hiring has, in most cases, been cut drastically. It could be a good opportunity for arts related businesses with limited funding to gain extra help.

This year’s program runs through September 30, 2010. Businesses should sign up now. They can apply at https://summerjobs.mo.gov/default.aspx. They may also call 800-592-6020 or email SummerJobs@ded.mo.gov.
