Lopez Blast Gives Cards Win in Chicago

CHICAGO – With two outs in the top of the 11th inning, Felipe Lopez crushed a home run to deep right field to give the Cardinals a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday night at Wrigley Field. The dramatic blast helped the Redbirds avoid the sweep and moved them back into first place in the National League Central, ½ game ahead of the second place Cincinnati Reds.

Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter and Cubs veteran Ryan Dempster went toe-to-toe all night, with both working seven innings and allowing three runs but neither factoring in the decision.

On the offensive side of things, all nine of the Cardinals starters – including Carpenter – had at least one hit. That includes Matt Holliday, who now has an 11-game hitting streak. But despite scattering 15 hits as a team the game stayed tight as the Redbirds had two runners (Ryan Ludwick and Skip Schumaker) thrown out at the plate.

The Cardinals had a chance to grab the lead in the 10th, but Holliday failed to score on Schumaker’s fourth hit of the night before Yadier Molina grounded into an inning-ending double play. Chicago also had a chance to win it in the 10th when a Schumaker error gave the Cubs an extra out with a two-out error, but Ryan Franklin – in his second inning of work – struck out Marlon Byrd looking to end the threat.

After a day off on Monday, the Cardinals will head to New York to take on the Mets starting on Tuesday evening. The Mets will send Jon Niese (6-4, 3.54) to the mound while the Cardinals have not yet announced their starting pitcher. Game time is 6:10 p.m.
