Frene Valley Owensville News for July 18 through July 24
By Krystal Martin
In 1927 movies learned to talk! Al Jolson broke the sound barrier in “The Jazz Singer.” By 1929 all talking, all singing and all dancing movies were making their appearance. MGM made a series of musicals called “The Broadway Melody” in 1929, 1936, 1938, and 1940. Also in 1929, the movie “Hollywood Review” introduced a new song called “Singin’ in the Rain,” with Cliff Edwards and many future stars. In the 1930’s Jimmy Durante did it. In the 1940’s Judy Garland did it her way. All this finally led up to the 1951 production of the same title, with Gene Kelly, Donald O’Conner and Debbie Reynolds. So “Singin’ in the Rain” will be our feature movie at the Frene Valley Theater Wednesday July 28th at 6:30 p.m.
Sunday July 18th Church services were held by Les Dority from the Owensville Assembly of God. Later that afternoon the residents enjoyed spending time with family and friends on the front patio.
Monday morning Pastor Jackie Asher was here bright and early for our weekly Bible Study group. Later that morning we all headed over to the kitchen area to make muffins. We made blueberry and poppy seed muffins. We all had a hard time deciding which ones were the best. While the muffins were cooking we worked on a giant crossword puzzle. The puzzle was really hard. It even gave Bonnie a run for her money and that’s saying a lot because she is our crossword puzzle queen. Needless to say, after much deliberation we decided to look in the back of the book for the answers, and we finished the puzzle in no time flat. Bingo was played Monday afternoon and a trip to the Pub finished off the afternoon nicely.
Tuesday morning after breakfast we gathered in the activity room for Fun & Fitness, where after a little movin’ and groovin’ we decided to play beach volley ball. A few rounds of Card bingo kept us busy until lunch. Later that afternoon we were all happy to see Pastor Jackie Asher. She volunteered to come in and sing for us. Jackie sang an assortment of love songs and gave us a brief history on each song. She did an amazing job and we are all looking forward to the next time she comes in to sing for us.
Wednesday morning after Fun & Fitness it was time to celebrate all the July Birthdays with a party hosted by the Ladies VFW Auxiliary. A special thanks goes to Joan Holt, Dawn Hennington, Diane Rector and Susan Havelka for bringing in all the wonderful cakes. We would also like to thank Peggy Emde for coming in and lending a helping hand during the party. Residents celebrating Birthdays this month include Anne Arnold, Nora Engelbrect, Ruth Lottman, Flora Finn, Mariann Luther, Eddie Enke, Evelyn Derma, and Thelma Knott. Here’s wishing you all a Happy Birthday! And many more. We welcomed Maryann Barbarick and Joann Micheals for Sing a Long later that afternoon. We are so grateful to all of our volunteers that are helping us out while Joann Able is out. We miss her and are wishing her a speedy recovery.
Thursday morning during Fun & Fitness we had such a large crowd that we decided to get out the parachute and play with it for a while. I forgot how much work it is on the arms. The pain was worth it. We had such a great time! Art lessons with Ann were also a big hit this morning. Ann showed the group how to use watercolors on their projects. We have quite a few artists in the building and we have decided to enter a few of the drawings in the fair next week. Thursday afternoon Carl Rose kept or hands clappin’ and our feet tappin’ along to the music that he and his friend sang.
Friday morning the Ladies from the Immaculate Conception Church were here to offer Rosary to all the Catholic residents. Adena spent the morning handing out ice cream cones to all the residents. Bingo was played later that afternoon with tons of great prizes for everyone.
Saturday afternoon residents enjoyed music with Joann, Jr. and friends. It is always a treat when they sing for us.
