A Letter From The City Regarding Potholes

by John Campbell, City of Hermann Street Superintendent

As you all know, we have had some unusual weather this winter. We’ve  experienced several periods of snow, some rain and many cycles of freezing, and  thawing leaving several potholes behind. The Street Department will be patching  some of these holes, starting with the high traffic areas and concentrating on the worse. You will notice that some streets that look worst than others will get little attention at first.

Most of these streets will be overlaid in time as weather, staffing and materials permit. We are also working on a plan to seal streets that are beginning to crack. This practice is commonly used to buy time while we concentrate on the more critical areas.

Additional planning and work will be necessary, like engineering for storm water and any utilities running under the streets, to prevent the need to go back and tear up a fresh overlay, wasting our  tax dollars.

These projects, when done correctly can take time. Our goal is to keep costs down, make sure our improvements are done the best way possible and that they last for many years. In practicing proper work procedures and using quality materials, we can achieve that goal and save valuable tax dollars in the process.

We ask that you please be patient and that you reduce your speed, use caution and good judgment when driving over rough surfaces and please, call the city office to report new pot holes or unsafe conditions. Remember, your cooperation is of great importance to us.

Thank you!
