Foreclosed Homes Can Be A Bargain For Some, A Nightmare For Others, BBB Warns

Savvy home buyers may find bargains among foreclosed homes the distressed economy has put on the market. However, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) urges buyers to educate themselves about the potential pitfalls of buying foreclosed properties.

“Bargain-hunters see foreclosures as a chance to buy prime properties for below-market prices,” said Michelle L. Corey, president and CEO of the St. Louis BBB. “While the purchase price may be lower, buyers need to be prepared for the unexpected, especially if they buy the properties at an auction.”

BBB Ready To Help Consumers After US Fidelis Bankruptcy

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is urging dissatisfied customers of US Fidelis to continue to pursue refunds and settlements with the company even though it filed for bankruptcy on Monday.

During a Featherlite Trailer company meeting in Rochester, Minn., on February 23 and 24, Schneider Dodge Jeep & Featherlite Trailers in Hermann was awarded “2009 Rookie of the Year” from Featherlite Trailers. The award is given to the best first year dealership in the United States and Canada; overall sales determined who won the award. Schneider was one of 12 dealerships in the running for the award.

Business-owner Crystal Binkholder has closed one door and opened another. This week marks a milestone in her professional life. Monday was Crystal’s first day to operate Hermann Florist solely of out of her new location at 214 Market Street.

“I’ve been so pleased with this move,” Crystal said. “I didn’t know how the local support would be. Everybody who comes in has been saying how comfortable it feels. The other place had a more ‘industrial’ feel. This is definitely more cozy and comfortable.”

As part of his presentation on technology-based marketing and social media, Terry Hammer, co-owner of Hermann Hill Bed and Breakfast, told attendees of an In-keepers conference -- if they don’t constantly improve their businesses to meet the changing standards of guests, they could be out of business.

Hammer was a guest speaker at the Bed & Breakfast Inns of Missouri 2010 Innkeepers Educational Conference, held in Columbia on Feb. 8-9.
