CINCINNATI  – On a night that saw a bench-clearing brawl in the early going, the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds settled in to continue their battle to claim the top spot in the National League’s Central Division.

In the end, the Cardinals came away with an 8-4 victory to pull even with the Reds atop the division.

CINCINNATI  – Seven runs in the fourth inning – highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Skip Schumaker – was all the St. Louis Cardinals needed on Monday night in a 7-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

The Cardinals opened the fourth with six straight hits, the last of which was Schumaker’s grand slam, to turn a scoreless contest into a blowout in a matter of minutes. Albert Pujols, Matt Holliday and Colby Rasmus also drove in one run each in the frame as the Redbirds gave starting pitcher Chris Carpenter all the tallies he would need.

Next up for the Cardinals is a trip to Cincinnati

MIAMI  – Sunday afternoon’s game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Florida Marlins has been rained out.

The Cardinals will next travel to Cincinnati to take on the first-place Reds at the Great American Ball Park. Entering the series, the Cardinals trail the Reds by two games in the National League Central.

On Monday, Cincinnati will send Mike Leake (7-3, 3.86) to the mound. St. Louis will counter with Chris Carpenter (12-3, 2.91). Game time is 6:10 p.m.

MIAMI  – Squaring off against Florida’s Josh Johnson, who happens to own the best ERA in the National League, St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jake Westbrook was given a tough assignment on Saturday night in Miami in a game that saw neither pitcher get a decision. In the end, it was Florida prevailing over the Redbirds in ten innings, 5-4.

Wainwright Hurls Complete Game Shutout as Cards Crush Marlins

Pujols continues hot streak with his 28th home run of the year

MIAMI  – Adam Wainwright was his dominant self, on Friday night, tossing a complete game shutout in the Cardinals 7-0 victory over the Florida Marlins at Sun Life Stadium. Over his nine innings of work, Wainwright gave up just two hits – an infield single and a blooper over second base – to improve to 16-6 on the year while lowering his ERA to 2.07. He struck out seven on the night and walked just three.

Westbrook strong in Cardinal debut, but curious positioning of infield leads to big inning for Astros

ST. LOUIS – In his first start as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals, veteran Jake Westbrook pitched well enough to earn a win against the Astros on Monday night at Busch Stadium. Unfortunately, when all was said and done, he didn’t figure into the decision in what eventually became a 9-4 victory for the Houston Astros.

ST. LOUIS – Adam Wainwright worked seven innings and gave up just one run, improving his record to 15-6 on the year in the Cardinals 9-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday afternoon at Busch Stadium.

Wainwright also contributed a pair of hits, drove in a run and scored a run as the Redbirds swept the Pirates by scoring 20 runs in the final two games of the series. Brendan Ryan, meanwhile, continued his hot hitting with three more hits – including a double – to improve his average to .218 on the year.

ST. LOUIS – Jeff Suppan had his best start of the year, tossing 5 1/3 shutout innings in the St. Louis Cardinals 11-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night at Busch Stadium to earn his first victory of the 2010 season.

Albert Pujols had three hits, including his 24th home run of the year, while Yadier Molina also had three hits and a run scored. Felipe Lopez, Brendan Ryan and Colby Rasmus had two hits each, with Rasmus hitting his 17th home run of the year.
