Hermann Schools Hand Out Staff Awards To Officially Wrap Up School Year

Though the 2009-2010 school year is over, the Gasconade County R-1 (Hermann) School District handed out staff awards after a luncheon Monday afternoon

Though the 2009-2010 school year is over, the Gasconade County R-1 (Hermann) School District handed out staff awards after a luncheon Monday afternoon. Ten staff members who are retiring were honored for their time and service to the district. Combined, the 10 had 238 years of experience.

Mrs. Franke chose to teach because she liked working with people, especially kids. She got her Bachelor's in Elementary Education from
Bowling Green State University in Ohio, and then went on to get her Master's in Counseling and Administration from University of Missouri-St. Louis. Eventually she earned a PhD in Education from UMSL. Forty years later, it is clear she made the right choice, as she is still teaching as the counselor at Hermann Elementary School.

Teacher Feature: Brenda Grotewiel

As people grow up, the basics in life to a kid are very important, the same for the people to who teach. Mrs. Brenda Grotewiel teaches Family and Consumer Sciences at H.M.S. and is also the sponsor of FCCLA. She has taught for 15 years, HMS for 9 years, St. George for 3 years, Blair Oaks for 3 years.

Teacher Feature: Mrs. Ketha Bounds

Mrs. Ketha Bounds is a music teacher at Hermann Elementary School. She works with students from kindergarten to fourth grade. She received her bachelor's degree in Music Education, Kindergarten through 12th grade, Vocal and Instrumental at Central Methodist College in Fayette, Mo. She's taught at the Morgan County R-1 School District in Stover, Mo., for one year, and has been teaching in Hermann for the past 30
years. Over all she's been a teacher for thirty one years.

Rebecca Summers decided to teach because she loves working with kids and making a difference in their lives, and she has been teaching for ten years.

Rebecca Summers
decided to teach because she loves working with kids and making a difference in their lives, and she has been teaching for ten years. She taught special education for two years at Franklin County R-2 School before coming to Hermann.  Mrs. Summers now teaches fourth grade at Hermann Middle School.  She has also taught first grade during summer school in Hermann.

Throughout her life, Ms. Leah Lerbs has had a passion for teaching.

Throughout her life, Ms. Leah Lerbs has had a passion for teaching. In her early years she loved helping plan activities for her mom's classroom. Mr. Ray Ham, retired HHS School History Teacher and current substitute, was also a big influence in her career choice. Currently, Lerbs teaches 9th grade Government, Geography and Sociology.

Teaching is in the Genes: Ms. Amy Unnerstall

In her younger years, before her passion for teaching,  Amy Unnerstall was in 4-H showing hogs in the Town and Country fair in Washington. “I enjoy going for walks and riding bikes; I plan on riding in the MS150 next September,” said Unnerstall, who is also engaged to Justin Alferman and will be married July 24, 2010. They enjoy many things together and love watching movies.

Beth Miller teaches the third grade at Hermann Elementary and has been a teacher in the Hermann area for 17 years. When Mrs. Miller was interviewed for the job during the flood of 1993, the river was up so high that Lois (Hoerstkamp) Puchta and Art Draper had to take a boat across the river to meet her in Montgomery City.

“It is rewarding to teach and be a part of the process when a student learns something for the first time – the proverbial light bulb going on,” said Lolly Rogers, who's in her 18th year of teaching. She currently teaches Academic Lab and Math Skills. She says her favorite part about teaching is seeing her students succeed in both school and after they graduate.
