Tickets Remain For Saturday's Denim & Diamond Night

Tickets are still available for Saturday night's “Denim & Diamonds Casino Night” at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Hermann. All proceeds from the night will benefit the Hermann Area Crusade Against Cancer.

Events for the evening will include:
• Cocktails from 5 to 6 p.m. with drinks included with ticket purchase
• Cash bar from 6 to 11 p.m.
• Dinner from 6 to 7 p.m. - corned beef & cabbage, parsley potatoes, green beans, rolls & dessert

MU To Host Celebration For Famous Missourian Mark Twain

COLUMBIA – As Mark Twain’s boyhood home, the birthplace of Tom and Huck and the inspiration for many of Twain’s most famous literary works, Missouri holds a special claim to the internationally loved author. This March, the University of Missouri is holding a weeklong event, “Marking Twain: A Centennial Celebration of the Life and Legacy of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, 1835-1910,” to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Mark Twain’s death.

Book On Framers Of The Constitution To Be Covered By Upcoming Series At Memorial Baptist

Series will take place at Memorial Baptist Church in New Haven, beginning March 22 and running from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on eight consecutive Monday evenings.

Jerry Breihan will lead a class in the study of the book, The Five Thousand Year Leap:  28 Great Ideas That Changed the World,  by W. Cleon Skousen. The 2008 and 2009 editions feature a forward by Glenn Beck. Breihan’s series will take place at Memorial Baptist Church in New Haven, beginning  March 22 and running from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on eight consecutive Monday evenings.

The annual Friends of the Foundation Dinner benefiting the East Central College Foundation took place Friday night, February 26, at the Gala Event Center in Union Missouri.

Notable supporters of the Foundation enjoyed a gourmet dinner catered by The Finishing Touch, while music during the social hour and dinner was provided by the ECC Jazz Combo. The Honorable Judge David Hoven gave the Invocation.
 
Dr. Edward D Jackson, president of East Central College welcomed guests.
 

St. Louis Working Women's Survival Show Scheduled For This Weekend

Long-Time Meat Cutter Gets Help From Friends

To his customers and coworkers, Tony Masur had been a familiar face behind the meat counter at Loutre Market in Hermann, where he’d worked for more than 30 years. But that was before a series of health problems forced the 51-year-old head meat-cutter to quit work in November 2009.

The sound of metal hitting metal echoed above the loud voices and music Saturday afternoon at the Knights of Columbus building in Hermann. 124 people / 62 teams took part in the Miller Light washers tournament, which according to several people there, was the main draw for the chili cook-off. Starting at 1 p.m., the teams played past 7 p.m. as many onlookers milled about, taking in the sights and sounds.

Organized each of the past 11 years by Kevin “Soup” Stiers, the washer league started back in the early 1980s.

Fasching Ball "Puts on the Ritz" for 2010

This year’s Fasching Ball at the Hermannhof Festhalle takes on a 1920s-30s theme, with the Hermannhof Festhalle hosting an era swing dance, food and music on Saturday, Feb. 13. A Wine Bar Speakeasy opens at 8 p.m.

This year’s Fasching Ball at the Hermannhof Festhalle takes on a 1920s-30s theme, with the Hermannhof Festhalle hosting an era swing dance, food and music on Saturday, Feb. 13. A Wine Bar Speakeasy opens at 8 p.m.

Tickets for the music, dance and food cost $25. Participants are encouraged to dress in 1920s period clothing, in the spirit of the Great Gatsby. Some examples are Jean Harlow, Amelia Earnhardt, Elliott Ness (from the movie, The Untouchables), and Charles Lindbergh.

Chili Cook-Off is on

Even though snow canceled many events in the area for Friday night, Saturday's chili cook-off is still scheduled as planned. Sponsored by Calvin's Distributing Company and the Hermann Knights of Columbus, the Super Bowl themed cook off will start at 12 p.m. and go until 8 p.m.

Even though snow canceled many events in the area for Friday night, Saturday's chili cook-off is still scheduled as planned. Sponsored by Calvin's Distributing Company and the Hermann Knights of Columbus, the Super Bowl themed cook off will start at 12 p.m. and go until 8 p.m.

In addition to the cook-off, there will be music, games, gun raffles, contests, prizes and an auction. Proceeds will benefit Knights of Columbus charities, the Hermann Fire Department and the St. George Catholic grade school.
