Ask the Superintendent: Funding Questions

Does the public school receive funding for students who attend St. George school?

by Chris Neale, Superintendent, Gasconade Co. R-I Schools

At the risk of sounding like a politician, I can tell you quite truthfully "Yes and No." In very broad terms, public school funding is
not dependent on enrollment in any private school. Neither is it affected by home school status. The exceptions to that statement are
aspects of three federally funded programs: Title II, Title IV, and IDEA (or Special Education), which are intended to meet the needs of certain students.

"What improvements will be made to the middle school campus with bond proceeds?"

Hermann Middle School was opened about 1970, predating the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. As with the plans for Hermann Elementary, we intend to bring this building into greater compliance with ADA accessibility standards. We also intend to solve a number of space/program issues.

Becoming a principal has always been a goal of Chip Stutzman's, but becoming a principal in Hermann was even better. A former head coach for the high school football team, Stutzman has spent 10 year in the district with this year as the dual role of assistant high school principal and A+ coordinator.

“I saw it as an opportunity to move up, to become the leader of a building,” said Stutzman. “I can take my experience in education and pass it onto others.”

Budget Main Focus Of School Board Meeting

A decrease in revenue may lead to some cuts

by Jessica Nelson

Focus fell on the upcoming 2010-2011 school budget at Monday night's Hermann School Board meeting. Superintendent Chris Neale presented preliminary figures to the board and said that if the numbers hold true, the district would see a decrease in revenues and may need to prepare for cuts.

“We need to make sure we get the right people in the right jobs,” said Neale. “We have lived within our means and don't have to cut $5.6 million like Columbia is or 75 jobs like Fulton and they're just about twice our size.”
