Blacksmithing Demonstration Entertains And Informs

The first-ever "Evening With The Blacksmith" demonstration proved a success last Friday night, giving several craftsmen the chance to show off their process.

Organized by Hermann resident John Wilding, the event spanned three hours, giving the three blacksmiths in attendance plenty of time to create numerous small works. Step-by-step, they took questions from the assembled crowd, and even helped others participate in blacksmithing of their own.

"An Evening With The Blacksmith" To Be Hosted Friday

"An Evening With The Blacksmith" will run from 6:30-9:30 p.m. on Friday evening and host several area craftsmen.

By Anna Wiegenstein

John Wilding knows the typical perception of blacksmithing: something out of the 1800s, rather than a trade in the 21st century.

"A lot of people think blacksmiths died off 50 years ago or more," he said. But Wilding himself proves this incorrect -- his business, Red Barn Antiques and Crafts, has numerous tables dedicated to pieces made only months ago. And on Friday, the point will be repeated through Wilding's event, "An Evening With The Blacksmith."

Drake Methodist Picnic Success Despite Heavy Rain

The picnic started about 3:00 p.m. In spite of the pouring rain, which came in about 4:30, it was well attended, with the crowd a little heavier than usual

Drake Zoar United Methodist Church on Highway 19, one mile north of Highway 50, held its annual Memorial Day Picnic Monday. The church’s name, Zoar, whose origin is forgotten by most of the community, was the place in Genesis where Lot and his daughters fled after leaving Sodom and Gomorrah. It was spared because of its smallness. The word means little.
