Niangua River Produces Missouri's First Record Fish Of 2010

The 4-pound, 5-ounce white sucker is the first ever recorded for alternative methods.

BUFFALO, Mo.-A gigging trip on the Niangua River in Dallas County produced Missouri's first state-record white sucker in the alternative methods category. Fifteen-year-old Joshua Lee Vance of Bolivar gigged the 4-pound, 5-ounce fish around 8:30 p.m. Jan. 19, setting Missouri's first state fishing record of the year. The fish was 21.25 inches long.

MDC to Test Quick Draw System at Three Wetland Areas

JEFFERSON CITY–Missouri hunters will take part in a pilot program this fall to make waterfowl hunting at state-owned wetland areas less of a gamble.

The Missouri Department of Conservation will test an online drawing system called Quick Draw. The system is intended to change the way daily drawings are conducted to assign waterfowl hunting opportunities at state wetland areas. The new system still will include a pre-draw portion (Quick Draw) and a daily drawing for remaining open slots.

Six Students Compete in State Speech Finals Missouri Pork Association Hosts Annual Event

COLUMBIA - Austin Steele, a student with the Miller FFA program, impressed the judges with his speech, "Strategies for Pork Producers in Challenging Times" to win the FFA Pork Speaking Contest state finals, held on February 10 at the 2010 Missouri Pork Expo.

Steele was one of six speakers to reach the state finals. Students qualified for the finals by winning their area, then district contest.

With the victory, he earned a plaque and a check for $200.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) decision regarding the expanded Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS2) regulations was met with mixed emotions from the
Missouri Corn Growers Association (MCGA). On Wednesday, the EPA recognized the environmental benefits of corn-based ethanol, yet MCGA leaders were frustrated by the agency's provisions to incorporate international indirect land use changes (ILUC) in their calculations.

Horse Farm Owner Charged With Animal Abuse

The owner of the horse farm in Rosebud, Mo. where a dozen animals were found dead and 13 in sickly condition, has been charged with fourteen counts of animal cruelty, which is a class A misdemeanor.

Gasconade County Prosecuting Attorney Ada Brehe-Krueger filed the charges against Dennis Hiatt, 49, of Rosebud, on Monday. An arraignment hearing, during which time Hiatt would enter a plea of guilty, or not, has yet to be scheduled. However, a special hearing to determine how the surviving horses are to be disposed of is set for Wednesday, Feb. 10.

Farm Bureau Pleased with House Action on Farmland Assessments

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- By a vote of 140 to 15, the Missouri House of Representatives approved a concurrent resolution rejecting the State Tax Commission’s recommendations increasing farmland assessments by a total of 11.5% statewide.

The two-day event includes 18 allied industry exhibits featuring the latest developments in the dairy industry. Admission is free. The keynote luncheon speaker on Friday is U.S. Congressman Roy Blunt, 7th District. Blunt is a leader in energy issues, having crusaded for more American-made energy in 2008. He currently is chairman of the GOP Health Care Solutions Group.
