Department of Agriculture Removes 108 Dogs from Substandard Facility in Miller County

JEFFERSON CITY – The Missouri Department of Agriculture’s animal care team, with assistance from the Miller County Sheriff’s Department, U.S. Department of Agriculture and Humane Society of Missouri, has taken action to protect 108 dogs living in substandard conditions in Miller County. The dogs, mostly Shih Tzus, Schnauzers, Beagles, Cocker Spaniels and Pekingese, lacked adequate living space, ventilation, sanitary living conditions and food and clean water at this facility near Tuscumbia, Mo.

Farm Photos Sought for Statewide Photo Contest

JEFFERSON CITY - Today, the Missouri Department of Agriculture launched Focus on Missouri Agriculture, an online photo contest asking the public to help capture the story of agriculture in pictures. The contest, which will run through July 26, asks amateur photographers to submit their best photographs depicting Missouri agriculture.

Everett Forkner, a pork producer from Richards, Mo., has been elected vice president of the National Pork Board by his fellow board members. He will serve a one-year term effective July 1.

Farm Bureau Reaction to Senate’s Failure to Control EPA

JEFFERSON CITY - By a vote of 47 for and 53 against, the U.S. Senate today failed to pass a resolution to prevent the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating greenhouse gases without legislative guidance from Congress.

On April 6th, the Western District Court of Appeals vacated the judgment previously issued by the Cole County Circuit Court restricting the location of a livestock operation near Arrow Rock State Park.   Some reporting of the Court of Appeals decision suggested it was a win for CAFOs (concentrated animal feeding operations), trying to make it a size issue, and thus missed the whole point of the appeal.

Missourians can be proud of their taxpayer supported program to conserve the state’s soil and water resources.  The Soil and Water Conservation Program has been an undeniable success; soil erosion rates have fallen markedly and landowners take pride in the voluntary practices being implemented throughout the state.  Regretfully, given the continued decline in state revenue, there is a concern the program’s dedicated funds could be targeted for other uses.  This would be a serious mistake.
