Humane Society to Hold Wine Whiskers and Wags’ Auction

The Franklin County Humane Society (FCHS) in Union will be holding its annual ‘Wine, Whiskers and Wags' Auction plus hors d’oeuvre and wine-tasting fundraising event on Saturday, Aug. 28 from 6:00 p.m. until 9 p.m. Due to the economy, the fundraiser is critical to the FCHS shelter’s ability to remain open to receive animals from our area.

Republican 111th Legislative District Committee to Meet to Reorganize

GERALD -- The third Wednesday of August following the state primary, all Legislative District Committees are to meet to reorganize, by state statute.

Accordingly, the Republican 111th Legislative District Committee will meet to reorganize on Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at 7 p.m. in Gerald Old City Hall (in the same building as the police department off of Highway 50). All members of the Committee are asked to attend the meeting.

Paul Schoene to be inducted into 4-H Hall of Fame

Shoene passed away in August of 2000. His daughter, Rebecca Erni of Union, will accept the honor on his behalf.

Paul Schoene, Franklin County’s Mr. 4-H, will be inducted into the Missouri 4-H Hall of Fame in a ceremony scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 15 at the Missouri State Fair. The ceremony will be held in the Youth Building Cafeteria. The ceremony is open to the public. Shoene passed away in August of 2000. His daughter, Rebecca Erni of Union, will accept the honor on his behalf.

Missouri River Valley on the Rise to Help Quail

WASHINGTON - Quail enthusiasts from Missouri's Franklin and Warren Counties have started the Missouri River Valley Chapter of Quail Forever. The group is focused on improving area habitat for quail and has identified a four-pronged strategy for accomplishing their chapter's goals.

 The chapter's strategy is focused on land management practices able to improve the area's available habitat for quail, as well as benefiting other species of wildlife. Those four practices include:

New Haven Chamber of Commerce to Meet

The New Haven Area Chamber of Commerce will meet Thursday, Aug. 5, at noon at the New Haven Care Center. Those attending are asked to park in the Trinity Lutheran Church parking lot. The entry to the meeting room can be seen from that lot.

Other than routine business and reports, topics of interest will include Hwy. 100 Beautification, Downtown Revitalization, Franklin County Tourism, Economic Development, DREAM, Website update, Splish Splash Cash update, Balloon Festival report, Chamber Banquet report and announcements of future events.

Past 4-H Members of Gasconade County Sought for Reunion Picnic

OWENSVILLE – The Gasconade County 4-H Council is planning a reunion of past members in the form of a potluck picnic. Coming up on October 10, the event will be held at the Youth Building on the Gasconade County Fairgrounds in Owensville. A specific time has not been set.

Currently 11 4-H clubs exist in the county. With consolidations and closings, the number has not been constant through the years. Anyone who has been a member of any 4-H club in the county, past or present, is invited to attend the picnic.

Smaller, Friendlier, Gasconade County Fair Attracts New and Repeat Vendors

Friday night's storm was reported hours before it hit. Vendors had ample time to cover their wares.

The Gasconade County Fair attracts visitors and vendors from around the area and also from a distance. Texans were repeat visitors. Some of the vendors were mentioned in a previous article. Here are additional ones who set up at the four-day fair.

From St. James, with jewelry and flags, was Russell Bullock. Leonard Vogt of Gerald sold and took orders for Watkins products. From Union, MC Sales peddled caps.

They Came from All Around to Sell at the Fair

Folks came from all over to the Gasconade County Fair, not just fairgoers but also those with goods and services to sell. Vendors at the fair include the following.

From Haines City, Fla., with two large food booths, was Annie Jackson, who calls herself and her business Smiley’s. Annie sold a lot of corn dogs. Annie and her husband, Jim, also own the midway, known as J & J Magic Midways.

Ice Cream Social & Dance At Hermann Rotunda Aug. 15

The fifth annual Brush & Palette Ice Cream Social will be held at Hermann's Upper City Park on Sunday, August 15 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the newly-restored Rotunda.

A feature of this year will be a dance in the Rotunda, a regular event in the building during the 1930s to 1950s. Put on your dancing shoes for a toe-tappin' time to music from the Big Band era through the 1960s and into the 1970s.
